Overview

Smart objects can be used in all kinds of places. They can tell you the weather conditions outside or the snow conditions on the mountain. Smart objects can help you find your way if you are lost. These objects are things that make every day life simpler and faster, and soon some objects will be able to know a lot more about what you want to know. Companies are coming out with new objects every few weeks, and every week with cell phones that can do anything with the touch of a button or the touch of a screen.

Smart objects can also include technology devices that are made to assist people in their everyday needs, and make things like internet, information, music and media more accessible. Of course with the development of smart objects peoples every day lives have become more technologically advanced. Instead of waiting for the morning paper, we simply check the internet on our phones. Everything has become on-the-go, and though this has benefits there is still a flip side. Smart objects are now embedded in our lives and we have come to rely on them, many people make valid points about the negative affect they could have in people. For example , because of smart objects our world has become faster than ever; we expect to get everything we want/need the second we think of it.[1]

Nowadays smart objects occupy every part of our life such as communication, education, companies, government, etc. However, privacy has come upon as a big issue caused from some smart objects especially GPS(global positioning system). GPS was invented by the United States in the late 1970s. When invented first, GPS was intended for world wide delivery especially weapon deliveries. It is a common application to people in 2000s, and can be found every place. However, GPS has been threatening our privacy. Parents became able to track their children, and companies became able to track their employees misconducting. Even though this smart application certainly connected the globe as a whole, and improved convenience of our life, it has also degenerated and worsened our integrity and privacy.

A smart object is an object that includes an identifier that can track information about the object.Some examples are the radio frequency identification tags, quick response tags, and simply smart cards. Objects that have information are used in local stores, passport identification, and different applications. Many objects are used to find how much money is in your card, and when a book is checked out of the library. There is also household equipment that knows where they are located like the coffeepot can tell the temperature of the area. The quality that makes a smart object more interesting is the way they connect with the real world and the informational world. Smart objects can be used to do physical things like tracking. Smart objects are used by us like when you want to play a specific playlists when the object is scanned.

An interesting thing about the smart object is the way they unite the world of information and the physical world. An example of a smart object is a radio-frequency identification tag. They know about certain kinds of information, like which book has been checked out of the library and who checked it out. Smart Cards are another example of a smart object. Smart chips are implanted in some of our household appliances like coffeepots.While you pour yourself some coffee in the morning, the coffeepot can tell you local information as well as the time.

Smart objects can sense and communicate with other objects and improve their own status. The Cyber Tyre by Pirelli is a great example of a smart object. It uses a sensor, which is located in the tire of a car, to monitor the tire’s pressure as well as the car’s movements. The information acquired is then used by the car’s monitoring system to improve performance.

Smart objects are also beginning to appear in the education systems. Libraries are a main target for smart objects. ThinkeringSpace, is a new invention that is recently underway. The project is being based at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The homepage says, “ThinkeringSpace is a system, made of both physical and virtual environments, that aims to promote creative and critical thinking skills for the 21st century.” Semapedia is another smart object that will help benefit education. It is a way to connect Wikipedia knowledge with relevant places in physical space.

One of the major problems people think will arise from these so called “smart objects” is our own personal security, privacy, and safety. People can be tagged just as easily as objects. Some unions are examining the cons and pros of these smart objects. This new “smart” technology promises to alter the way we identify and interact with physical objects but like any good thing, it takes time.

A smart object is a device that stores different kinds of information. Smart objects such as computers, cell phones, and iPods are used in everyday life. They are used to make remembering things like phone numbers, birthdays, or important meetings less of a hassle. Other smart objects are used to ensure safety. Medical technologies are constantly advancing. Most of the medical advancements are due to the microtechnology and nanotechnology that was recently created.the new advancements have made surgeries on small parts of the body easier and less painful to the patient.

Smart objects are getting more and more "smart" as the years are going by, and technology is becoming more advanced. Also, a smart object knows about itself for example where and how it was made, what it is for, who owns it, and how they use it.

In the movie "Twister", storm chasers create a machine, called Dolly, which is used to track the wind speeds and the overall magnitude of the tornado. Dolly device, which is composed of miniature smart objects, are put in the path of the tornado to be picked up. Once picked up by the tornado these smart objects send messages back to the base, telling it about its whereabouts. Although the movie is said to be somewhat unrealistic, it still brings up an exciting prospect. In this scenario the smart objects act as a catalyst to deliver information from the source to the storm chasers. There are so many ways in which smart objects can be applied within the educational realm, so that not only teachers, but students can also be catalysts throughout the process of education. Smart objects such as cell phones can be used to send new information from teachers to students and vice versa.

Some kinds of smart objects are radio-frequency identification tags, and quick response codes. Some of the most common smart objects are smart cards. Smart objects can interact with the physical world as well as the informational world. Since smart objects are quite tricky for the everyday user, they are trying to make them more user-friendly. Smart objects can sense and communicate with other objects, and update some of their own status. Semapedia is a collaborative project that aims to connect physical objects with online information from Wikipedia using QR codes.There is an insight of some ways that the objects might benefit education.Some sample applications for smart objects are Archaeology, Health care, and Oncology. I think that Smart objects will be a good thing for the future it seems very useful, and I use some of the smart objects now.

A particularly good example of a "smart object" is that of the Smart Fridge. This is a fridge that has had advanced technology installed into it. Some of the most complex of these contain a RFID reader that can tell you when you are running out of a certain item, and will then text you to inform you, or even connect directly with your suppliers via the internet. This version of the Smart Fridge is a Siemens refrigerator with the TV screen replaced with a touch screen, and a Postallo Computer embedded into it. This computer is equipped with customized web and database software. Even though it is only a prototype, the developers state that it is fully operational. So now not only can you watch television while cooking, but you don't even have to go grocery shopping anymore!

Smart objects are being use everyday in the technology world. It is usually being used to make education, science, work, and daily life easier. You don’t have to be a professional in technology to use them, because they are to smart to not be used. Smart objects nowadays mostly include touch screens (for example SMART Board is used in classrooms and offices) and memories spaces available to carry information. Although smart objects are more convenient for the generation we are living in now, but they can also make the people lazier.

Smart object were planned to be able to personalize household electronics that would make everyday much more efficient. The idea of smart objectsin everyday life is the ultimate goal for this certain branch of Microsoft. This technology is called SPOT technology (Smart Personal Objects Technology) and it is used to individualize a person's needs of his possessions. The first SPOT item to be incorperated into the market was the MSN Direct Watch. This can send up-to-date traffic, current gas prices, weather reports and Doppler maps, news, stocks, local events, movie information, flight status, and send to GPS all sent wirelessly to your watch!

Students can use Smart Objects to customize their learning styles and make the information their own. One of the ways in which they can do this is by choosing where they learn. Smart Objects gives them accessibility to learn on the go, or at home if they choose to. "The thing that makes smart objects interesting is the way they connect the physical world with the world of information. Smart objects can be used to digitally manage physical things, to track them throughout their lifespan, and to annotate them with descriptions, opinions, instructions, warranties, tutorials, photographs, connections to other objects, and any other kind of contextual information imaginable" (27). This helps students enhance their learning experience by digitally managing everything they learn.
