4C Integrity and Geo-Everything

Essential question:

Integrity says that "Technologies strip away the barriers between companies and their various constituencies". Likewise, integrity / Digital citizenship means that NetGen expects an ethical use of this tool not only by their school/ company/ organization but each other. How should this technology be used by schools, educators, and students in ways that reflect integrity? What are good uses or bad uses that have been documented? What sorts of agreements between institutions, educators, and students should be put in place to allow the effective use of this tool in an educational setting?

Ethical Use of Geo-Technologies in Schools and Universities

The good uses are that with an iPhone you can upload geotagged photos.

Google Earth is a good example of an improving geo-technology. The free version of Google Earth allows you to take a virtual journey to any place in the world. The journey includes landmarks, satellite imagery, and maps of the place you are virtually visiting. It allows you to see rich geographical content of the place in the world. The advanced version of Google Earth allows you to access the ultimate site for presentations, research, and is an ultimate collaboration tool for location-specific information. Google Earth Enterprise Solutions is the ultimate way to see customize Google Earth databases for your business, public agency, or organization.
The use geo-tracking can help people to track the positions of objects. This could be used to stalk someone as a bad use or if the information used to track the object gets into the wrong hands it could cause major problems. On the other hand geo tracking was used in the go green foundation to find out the kids' carbon footprint. In San Francisco students were given cell phones to track their carbon footprints. This gave them insentive to walk more and drive less, helping the environment.

Code of Ethics

What should be in a student code of ethics when using geo technologies as part of their educational experience?

Educator Ethics

What are the good and bad uses of this tool by educators?
The educators should focus on content standards, particularly the "Geography for Life" standards. Published in 1994 this should be used as a guide for integrating geo spacial technologies. These standards explain most of the aspects of using geo spacial technologies.
The use of geo spacial technologies can help to preserve the teacher education programs in the world. If educators remian too focused on the aspect of keeping their jobs, they will ruin the learning experience for the students. If teachers learn efficiently how to use the geo spacial technologies they will improve their teaching and the experience that the students have during their class. If students know that their education is being improved as the teacher learns more about the technologies and becomes more efficient with them, they will be inspired to keep trying.

Code of Ethics

What should be in an educator code of ethics when using or allowing the use of geo technologies as part of the educational experience?

Institutional Ethics

What are the good and bad uses of this tool by schools and universities?

The use of Geo-technologies by students is good because students could use google earth in geography to freely look at countries instead of using books or an atlas. Some bad examples of Geo-technologies are that it can corrupt security; if you go onto google maps you can look at peoples houses. Also this technology can be too easily accessible so students don't know how to research properly.
The use of geo technologies is improving. After Hurricane Katrina the Geographic Information Science accelerated and enhanced decision making in the emergency rescue. Most of the needed information in the disaster management had a spatial dimension; geo-technologies were a vital source in the process. This also provided new challenges surrounding the use of geo technologies. Although this isn’t an example of the use of geo technologies in schools it does demonstrate how far they have come and how they will change in the future. Once they have been improved they will be even better and more efficient in the school systems. The use of these technologies will eventually end up in the successful and trustworthy hand of schools and universities world-wide. If they could help with disaster prevention, imagine what they could to for learning.
