4B Integrity and Cloud Computing

Essential question:

Integrity says that "Technologies strip away the barriers between companies and their various constituencies". Likewise, integrity / Digital citizenship means that NetGen expects an ethical use of this tool not only by their school/ company/ organization but each other. How should this technology be used by schools, educators, and students in ways that reflect integrity? What are good uses or bad uses that have been documented? What sorts of agreements between institutions, educators, and students should be put in place to allow the effective use of this tool in an educational setting?

Ethical Use of Cloud Computing in Schools and Universities

Student Ethics

Cloud computing is an extremely valuable tool that can be used by schools and other organizations. It is very efficient an allows large amounts of data to be easily accessed. One of the leaders in Cloud Computing is Google. The Google Documents feature allows students to upload, share, and collaborate their work with anyone they want. Schools should take advantage of this tool, it offers many benefits. First of all, it can eliminate the use of lots of unnecessary paper and cut school budgets. If students use this tool correctly, it can greatly benefit everyone. But, if students abuse this tool, it can cause problems for everyone. Another example of cloud computing, comes through YouTube, which also can be a great utility in school. For example, educators can show students all types of videos to better their understanding and knowledge of a subject matter. But, once again, if this resource is abused by students it can cause problems. Students need to demonstrate respect an integrity when using the internet. Some examples of students abusing these technologies include posting innapropriate things. Lots of students feel the internet can allow them to be anonymous and that htis protects them. But really, it doesn't. Students could possibly create an account with a different name (so that the teacher doesn't know who they are) and upload documents that possibly complain about a teacher or other student, or even poke fun at them. They could also use YouTube to create innapropriate videos which could get them in lots of trouble.

Code of Ethics

Students should always be respectful over the internet. They should focus on appropriate topics that are determined by the teacher. When something is put on the internet, it is available for the whole world to see, therefore it should demonstrate class and respect by the people and organizations it affects.

Educator Ethics

As explained above, teachers can use cloud computing in many ways to enhance students' knowledge. There has been countless examples of teachers using YouTube and its large variety of educational videos. For example in an Astronomy classroom a teacher could show the students a video about auroras or in a world history class, the teacher could show a video about tranch warfare. These vieos can provide images and videos that regular textbooks can't. They can grasp the attention of the class and really get the kids to learn.
