Essential question:

Integrity says that "Technologies strip away the barriers between companies and their various constituencies". Likewise, integrity / Digital citizenship means that NetGen expects an ethical use of this tool not only by their school/ company/ organization but each other. How should this technology be used by schools, educators, and students in ways that reflect integrity? What are good uses or bad uses that have been documented? What sorts of agreements between institutions, educators, and students should be put in place to allow the effective use of this tool in an educational setting?

Ethical Use of Mobiles in Schools and Universities

It is very common for students to use phones in schools and universities, and this should be allowed. The only thing that should be banned is using mobile phones in classes. The use of mobiles in schools and univesities make students life's much easier.

Mobiles in schools make life a whole lot easier. It makes contacting your teachers, and other students much easier. It is also a very good way to find out some of the work that is due for your school. Say you have forgotten to write down some work that you had to do... then you just just pull out your laptop and look up the work. Also laptops are always helpful in helping with your everyday studies. It could help with your reaserch, or if you need some tips on how to make your work better. Teachers could use the internet to their advantage. They could organize their class, and plan out the week for their students to make everyday life a whole lot easier for the students. Overall mobiles should deffintely be allowed in colleges, and schools.

Student Ethics

She says the technology has many health applications.
"So, you might be looking at text messagingto improve population awareness about malaria prevention or how to prevent HIV/AIDS. What precautionary measures need to be taken. Or you could use mobiles to support public health data collection campaigns or immunization campaigns. Then you get to more sophisticated uses of mobile to support consultation and remote diagnosis, as well as being able to communicate with health workers, which there's a huge lack of in the developing world," she says.
For example, Uganda is using mobile phonesto raise awareness about a major health issue.
"In Uganda, there is a program called Text to Change, that's informing the population about preventative measures to avoid HIV/AIDS, what precautions do they need to take. And what we've seen through that program is a 40 percent increase in people taking HIV tests," she says.
Thwaites says such a system could be used to help deal with the ongoing cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe. What's more, she says mobile and computer technology could be used to help reach the Millennium Development Goals regarding maternal and child mortality and such diseases as HIV/AIDS, malaria, polio and measles.
The Mobile Health Alliance is expected to host a large conference by year's end, inviting both the private and public sector to join the effort.

What are documented good and bad uses of students using this tool in schools?

There are many ways mobiles will effect us at school, there can be negative and positive effects. The negative effects could be spending too much time texting or playing games on our mobile phones. We could even download music during school right from our phones or even checking our social sites like myspace or facebook, during school. There are a lot of positive things that will come from mobiles; one example of this is downloading graphing calculatorsto your mobile deviceto help you in math class. We could also use mobiles to get homework from teachers when we are not at school, and we can even type the answers back to them. It is also be nice to communicate with other students in and outside of school about homework or other projects we do in class. The best reason to use mobiles in class is the new i-phoneshave come out with a application for almost anything. For example instead of buying a ten dollar book, you can read the book on your phone for free.

I think mobiles could be very helpful in class, but if they distract students from learning they should not be used.
